    The Sinhala Language

Sinhala is the mother tongue of the Sinhalese people, who make up the largest ethnic group in Sri Lanka, numbering about 16 million. Sinhala is also spoken, as a second language by other ethnic groups in Sri Lanka, totalling about 3 million. It belongs to the Indo-Aryan branch of the Indo-European languages. Sinhala is one of the official and national languages of Sri Lanka. Sinhala, along with Pali, played a major role in the development of Theravada Buddhist literature.

Sinhala is also known as Sinhalese. Belonging to the Indo-Aryan branch of the Indo-European language family, Sinhala has a history that spans over two millennia. It is written in the Sinhala script, which is unique to the language and is derived from the ancient Brahmi script. Sinhala has a rich literary tradition, with a wealth of poetry, religious texts, and folklore that reflect the island's deep cultural heritage. The language is also an integral part of Sri Lankan identity, playing a central role in the nation’s cultural and religious practices.
